A homeless man who carried out a racist attack at Brighton railway station has been jailed for nine months.
Timothy Gladwish, 45, attacked Kevin Ramsay as he walked through the station on January 21 last year. He was sentenced at
Lewes Crown Court after admitting a charge of racially aggravated assault.
Prosecuting Alan Gardner said: "Mr Ramsay was catching a train
to London and was making a call on his mobile phone when the defendant walked past him. He then turned to face him.
"He then headbutted Mr Ramsay on the bridge of the nose. Mr Ramsay pushed the defendant back and at that point the defendant began to shout racist abuse at Mr Ramsay.
Ahmed Hossain, defending, said: "On that evening Mr Gladwish tells me he had gone out for a couple of drinks. He was not going out to look for trouble. However, he has no recollection of the incident at all, and that is due to the amount of alcohol he had consumed.
"Alcohol has played a large part in his past and he does
not attempt to dispute the events. However, what he does say is that he was not motivated at all by racism. He does not call himself a racist and he says that the words just slipped out."
