A leading record label could be pumping thousands of pounds into a college to help its bid for performing arts status.

Bosses at EMI contacted Boundstone Community College in Lancing after hearing of its bid for £580,000 of Government funding. Representatives from the record giant were impressed when they visited the college for talks with staff and a tour of the facilities.

They are currently considering whether to support the campaign. The college needs to raise £50,000 to accompany its bid, which, if successful, would mean more equipment and extra facilities for students. Arts facilities at the college would be updated and funding would improve facilities for music and drama and promote personal artistic development.

Head teacher Glynnis Cooke said: "If EMI are able to support us it would be fantastic. We were delighted when they called us and said they had heard about our bid. We had a very enjoyable meeting with EMI.

"They seemed extremely interested to see what we were doing and very impressed when we took them round the college. If we were successful in the bid, it would enrich the facilities we already have at Boundstone.

"We would be able to employ more specialists at the college and offer extra opportunities for students out of hours. We have had a lot of smaller donations from the community, who have been very generous. It's all money in the pot and we are busy writing the bid at the moment."

A spokeswoman for EMI said: "We visited the college and were extremely impressed with what we saw there. We hope to consider them along with other colleges looking for potential sponsorship in the near future."

The bid will be submitted to the Government in June and, if it succeeds, the cash would be distributed over a four-year period. Anyone who wants to help with sponsorship or join the campaign should call 01903 755894.
