A couple got more than they bargained for when traffic police pulled them over during a naked stunt performed live on radio.

Jackie and Chris Smith, both 38, of Cromwell Street, Brigh-ton, blushed as officers took down their particulars. The daredevil duo were driving in the nude between Eastbourne Pier and Palace Pier, Brighton, in a challenge set by radio station Southern FM.

They were halfway through the 20-mile journey when the police flashed them. Two officers pulled over the silver Peugeot, being driven by Chris as part of a competition called Who Dares Wins. Baffled PC Adrian Short refused to spare the couple's blushes.

He carried out a full roadside check of the car and demanded Chris produce his driving licence within seven days. PC Short said: "I have never seen anyone driving naked before. They could have been nicked for indecent exposure."

A kitchen fitter at Craftship in Ditchling, Chris said: "I was shaking but it wasn't because of the cold. I really thought we were in trouble. We still have to produce our documents at a station."

Chris and his wife turned up at Eastbourne Pier to answer the challenge and were told they had to drive naked along the coast road. He said: "The naked truth is that we now have £100 each, which will come in useful buying drinks to steady our nerves. I have done a lot of daft pranks in my time but never with a radio crew behind me."

Jackie said: "I would never do it again but it was certainly an unusual way to start the day."

Simon Barker-Davies, known by his nickname of Moody on Southern FM's breakfast show, said: "I don't know how I managed to convince them to

do it."
