CHOIR FESTIVAL: Stoke Brunswick School Choir travelled to London last week to take part in the first Schoolsong 2000 National Festival. The choir is made up of 30 children between eight and 13 and in recent years has received much acclaim as one of the best youth choirs in Britain.

They have performed in concerts in Hyde Park, at the Royal Albert Hall and the Buxton Opera House and in the semi-finals of the Sainsbury Choir of the Year competition. Schoolsong 2000 is sponsored by Capital Bank Plc and CGU, and is supported by the National Union of Teachers in associations with the British Federation of Youth Choirs.

STAMP COLLECTORS: At the meeting of the Worthing Philatelic Society, Derek Walker entertained the members with a fascinating display of the postmarks of West Sussex used during the reign of Queen Victoria.

The next meeting on Thursday will be a display of Belgium given by Don Winkworth followed by the annual competitions.

LEGION: Members of the Worthing Branch of the Royal British Legion relaxed after the business side of the meeting with an interesting quiz devised by Mavis Chalcraft. These always cause much amusement as many of the members cannot resist giving humorous answers to some of the serious questions.

WARTLING WI: Jackie Salch spoke about her work with the voluntary services in which she covers a very wide field from the National Trust to Care for The Carers as well as Victim Support and a Children's Hospice in Kent.

After Jackie's talk the birthday buttonholes, made this month by Sylvia Walters, were handed out and the much admired table flowers this month were made by Madge Hibberd. The competition, entitled A Winter Warmer, was won by Marylin Holden with Barbara Hayman second and Sylvia Walters third.

AWARD: North Portslade Community Association has secured a National Lottery Millennium Awards For All grant of £3860 for Smiles and Tears, the Portslade community theatre group.

It was good news on two counts as they have also had a donation of £1,200 from Van den Berghs towards the cost of much needed equipment. What a great start to the millennium! Now they can knuckle down to some hard work preparing for their big launch in June with Fings Ain't Wot They Used To Be, a show depicting the last 100 years of Portslade's history with songs dance and drama.

However, prior to this they will be putting on two fund-raising cabarets, one on Saturday and one in April.

Saturday's show is at 8pm at Portslade Town Hall. This will have a love theme as it is almost St Valentine's and the audience are asked to wear or carry something pink!
