A train driver's quick thinking saved a man from being killed early today.

The driver of the 3.45am Blackfriars train saw a man standing on the track in the path of the train as it approached Gatwick station at 4.25am.

Slamming on the brakes, the driver managed to stop the train within feet of the man.

When the driver approached the man on the track there was a brief struggle but no-one was hurt and the man was eventually restrained.

Police later interviewed the man about the incident.

A Sussex Police spokesman said this morning that a man had been detained under the Mental Health Act.
