A man's body was found in a rail tunnel after he was struck by a train.

Police were alerted by the driver of the 16.47 London Victoria to Hastings train who saw the body on the tracks at Patcham yesterday.

Police spokesman Insp Carl Woodall said the man "had been hit by a train and was pronounced dead at the scene."

He added: "An investigation is ongoing but no further persons are being sought in relation to the incident.

"The name will be released once identification has been made and the relatives have been informed."

A Railtrack spokesman said the driver reported seeing the body in the Patcham tunnel. "It seems likely that another train hit it without the driver realising, which can often happen.

"We attended to help get the trains moving again. There were delays for only about 30-45

minutes."
