The standards of health and hygiene in 20 cafs and restaurants are being kept secret from the public.

Brighton and Hove City Council has refused a request from The Argus under the Freedom of Information Act to release health and safety inspection reports from a list of well-known premises.

The Argus asked for two years' worth of reports on a range of establishments from kebab shops to high street take-away chains and posh restaurants.

Our intention was to expose any restaurateurs who put diners' health at risk by consistently failing to meet hygiene standards.

But the city council said it was not in the public interest to disclose the requested information.

Freedom of information officer Paul O'Neill said it could prejudice ongoing cases against restaurants with unhygienic food preparation conditions.
