Albion have solved their goalkeeping crisis by landing Aston Villa youngster Wayne Henderson at the second time of asking.

The Republic of Ireland Under-21 international makes his debut on a month's loan in tomorrow's Championship opener at Derby, months after a mix-up over League regulations prevented a previous bid to sign him.

Giant 21-year-old French keeper Florent Chaigneau has also joined the Seagulls on trial from Rennes.

Manager Mark McGhee has not ruled out still re-signing Alan Blayney from Southampton, in spite of the double swoop, since Henderson can be recalled by Villa at any time.

Henderson travelled down to Brighton last night and will train today, together with fellow loan signing Paul McShane from Manchester United, the 19-year-old Republic of Ireland centre half who also makes his debut at Derby.

Henderson has trained with Albion before, at the end of January, when plans to sign him on loan as cover for the injured Michel Kuipers collapsed.

Henderson was on a season-long loan to Notts County at the time, which disallowed Villa from switching him to the Seagulls.

McGhee moved for Henderson with former loan keeper Blayney's protracted return on a permanent basis complicated by uncertainty over the future of Southampton's first choice Antti Niemi.

"Wayne is a boy we know and we think he can do well for us," McGhee said. "It doesn't rule out Alan Blayney, but we have to get on with Saturday.

"We will wait and see how the Niemi thing finalises itself, so it's not impossible that Alan is still in our thoughts."

Meanwhile, Chaigneau, 6ft 5ins and highly rated, has joined Monaco winger Sebastien Carole on trial after attracting the attention of Manchester United.

Youngster Richard Martin will be on the bench tomorrow, but McGhee says Chaigneau could be considered for next Tuesday's home game against Reading.

A calf injury in training yesterday has hit Argentinian Federico Turienzo's hopes of making his English debut against Phil Brown's Derby.

"They have a new manager with new ideas, but I think we have got to expect them to be among the contenders again, so we expect a very difficult game," McGhee said.

"We will set our stall out, as we did so often away from home last season, to make ourselves as difficult as possible to beat.

"We have got a back four and goalkeeper who have never played together, but the experience of Butters, Mayo and Dodd will make up for the inexperience."

McGhee received through the post yesterday a start-of-season present from Adam Virgo, the Albion youngster he sold to his old club Celtic last month for £1.5 million.

Virgo has signed his No. 4 Celtic shirt with a special message of thanks to the manager for all his help.
