Phil Waghorn has rejoined Genesis Brighton Bears as assistant coach.

But the BBL club have asked fans to remain patient as they wait for details of new players.

Waghorn, 38, rejoins the senior Bears set-up he last served alongside Mark Dunning in 2000/01.

He has worked with the club's youth set-up in recent seasons and his new role will involve establishing closer links between the senior and junior Bears.

The club plan to stage under-18 and under-16 matches as curtain raisers to BBL games.

Waghorn will combine the post with his job as Sussex basketball development officer.

Head coach Nick Nurse said: "We've talked to Phil a couple of times in recent years and it never quite came together.

"This time, the timing is good, which is great news for us. "Phil is somebody I feel comfortable with if I need to leave him in charge during the week or on match night and he has got a lot of years behind him in Sussex."

Waghorn had a stint as assistant at semi-professional Worthing Thunder but admitted he was looking forward to working with full-time players.

He said: "I enjoy coaching and I enjoyed my time at Worthing but the BBL offers a lot more games and being able to work with guys every day is an attraction.

"We'll be looking to develop a strong club structure. You need that whether you are top or bottom of the league."

Nurse has yet to sign any players for the coming season, which starts with a trip to Birmingham Bullets on September 24.

Tony Holley, Andrew Alleyne and Ronnie Baker are among the men expected to return from last season.

The Bears coach identified possible new signings while coaching USBL outfit Oklahoma Storm this summer.

He said: "I've got a couple of deals just about done.

"We are going to be aggressive this year and in great physical condition. I expect us to to be good and really fun to watch."
