While one can argue for or against the aesthetic merits of Frank Gehry's plans for the redevelopment of the King Alfred site in Hove, I have been disappointed with the shallow debate about the real consequences of the scheme.

At no time have I read how the development will address the important subjects of the environmental impact and how residents and passers-by will interact with the building.

It is vitally important that such a high-profile development makes full use of environmentally responsible techniques such as daylighting, use and control of rain water, passive ventilation, maximising the use of solar energy and so on.

The building must also allow people to interact in a meaningful way at street level, which many iconic buildings fail to do.

So I challenge the star architect and the planning authority to make this an iconic building which functions responsibly at all levels and is not just to be added to the litany of architectural award-winning buildings which satisfy members of your profession but fail the users and the wider environment.
