A 63-year-old man has died during a violent fight between a group of men in a busy shopping street.

Barry Dell, of Franklands Village, Haywards Heath, was stabbed during an attack in Haywards Road, last Thursday.

He was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton, where he died early yesterday morning.

Police said they were not yet treating the case as murder as they were awaiting the result of a post mortem.

Mr Dell was among a number of people involved in an altercation near the Iceland store in Haywards Road, at around 4.30pm.

Police said many witnesses had come forward following the incident.

It is believed around 50 people could have witnessed the fight.

A police spokesman said: "It was all happening as life was going on around it and a number of people tried to help, we are grateful for their assistance. However, a lot of people would have been alarmed by what they saw."

The attacks are believed to have begun with an incident in Sandy Vale, Haywards Heath, earlier in the afternoon.

Detective Inspector Gordon Denslow said: "We have already spoken to a large number of people but if there are any witnesses who have not yet spoken to the police, particularly in relation to the incident at Sandy Vale, I would ask them to call."

None of the other victims is believed to have been seriously injured.

At Crawley Magistrates Court on Saturday, Peter Kingston, 34, unemployed, of no fixed address, and Nicholas Dell, 32, unemployed, of Franklands Village, were remanded in custody for a week.

Both men were charged with violent disorder.

Kingston has been charged with wounding Nicholas Dell's 29-year-old brother, John Dell, at Sandy Vale, Haywards Heath.

Kingston was further charged with assaulting a police officer following his arrest.
