Mill Road, Patcham, is to remain closed indefinitely due to problems with its surface.

However, I would be extremely surprised if the latest accident (The Argus, October 14) didn't have something to do with speed.

Considering the maniacal way some drivers negotiate the link road and the police's love of speed cameras, why isn't there a camera there?

Some months ago, give way lines were introduced before the tunnel, giving priority to vehicles coming downhill. Since then, there have been a spate of serious accidents, at least one fatal.

Previously, drivers coming downhill were forced to slow down to give way. Now, they have no need to reduce speed.

This is compounded by the fact that when waiting at the give way lines, only about 30 yards of the road ahead is visible.

If there are no on-coming vehicles, you have to creep forward through the tunnel like a game of Russian roulette, with no way to avoid a speeding vehicle coming downhill.

Following the closure, to join the bypass going west, you have to go right around the roundabout, over a short space of road and two lanes of traffic at speeds of between 60 and 80mph.

These drivers are completely unaware other traffic could be crossing from the right and anyone who has driven this route will know how hair-raising it can be.

The powers-that-be need to urgently look at this junction.

There will be more serious accidents if corrective measures aren't taken immediately - and I don't mean there should be a park-and-ride scheme at Braypool.

Why not close permanently close Mill Road and use it for the park-and-ride scheme? It works well enough on Albion match days.
