The most recent concert by the LPO gave us a conductor and a virtuoso in the form of just one man. Thomas Zehetmair is a noted conductor and a violinist and proved to be a master of both.
On the podium with his baton, he opened the concert with Schubert's Overture To Alfonso Und Estrella, a German piece of fire and fury but really signifying nothing, similar to the opera of the same name.
But it was given a firm and muscular reading - as was Mendelssohn's Scottish Symphony, which Zehetmair delivered with verve, and lots and lots of noise.
But the highlight of the concert for me was when he became the violinist and played Mozart's 4th Violin Concerto, a time-travelling performance taking me into the streets of 18th-Century Vienna in a stunning and sensitive reading of the work.
