Extra police will be on duty for Brighton and Hove Albion's derby match with Crystal Palace on Sunday.
A force spokeswoman said the fixture had proved a "passionate" match in previous years and there was no reason to expect this weekend's game to be different.
Chief Superintendent Jeremy Paine, city police commander, said: "Extra officers will be visible and will provide a reassuring presence in the city.
"We want people to attend and enjoy this game and to enjoy the city centre.
Police have not announced how many extra officers will be deployed.
Mr Paine said: "We have worked closely with the club over the past five years to eradicate the influence of one or two unruly and rogue individuals who come to the city centre on match days intent on violence.
"For those who believe they can still try this I would remind them of the strong sentences recently handed out following our successful and relentless investigation after the violent disorder outside the Pump House last year."
Football hooligans earlier this month were jailed for a total of 21 years for taking part in violent clashes with Leeds supporters outside The Pump House pub in The Lanes, Brighton, in October last year.
