Set in an Australian mental asylum, this wonderfully comic play follows the trials and tribulations of a naive would-be theatre director's attempt to stage a play with some of the inmates as part of their therapy programme.
Right from the start his plans are hijacked by Roy who, being obsessed with Mozart, coerces Lewis into putting on Cosi Fan Tutte instead, despite the cast being unable to sing or speak Italian.
The play is full of witty lines and theatrical in-jokes interlaced with some political dialogue as the play is set at the time of the Vietnam War.
The author has created an amazing gallery of characters who inhabit the asylum.
And, while they may be caricatures we laugh at, we are also made to feel they have qualities which make them real.
Given the opportunity to demonstrate high-quality acting, the cast shine throughout and the evening is full of masterful individual performances.
Showing until Saturday, November 19. Call 01273 746118 for tickets.
