Fired up by from a break from writing and the current resurgence of British guitar bands, Paul Weller's latest album heralds a return to the form which made Wildwood and Stanley Road so massively popular in the Nineties.

As Is Now started as a collection of demos recorded in Paul's studio and then purposefully completed, immediately following his spring tour.

"We were still buzzing off it the tour and knew the basic outlines of the songs already because we'd been messing around with them at sound checks," he says.

"I really wanted to get that feeling of energy and excitement of cutting it live on to the record."

Reunited with the production team responsible for the stripped-back sound of Studio 150 (Paul's collection of cover versions released last year), the band, including Ocean Colour Scene's Steve Cradock on guitar, Steve White on drums and Damon Minchella on bass, worked intensively for eight hours a day, for two weeks.

The results were spot on. With passionate, powerhouse Brit rock alongside rich acoustic blues and rousing late-night piano excursions, As Is Now is in keeping with the best aspects of Paul's back catalogue.

"I didn't really think about what the songs were sounding like, it's just the way they came out. There's a lot of love in this record. Floorboards album track From The Floorboards Up stemmed from something me and Steve talk about that when you play live on a good night the music doesn't come from the band but from the energy of the crowd. It's that power you're always looking to tap in to."

Touring is a constant source of inspiration for Paul, which explains why he does it so extensively. He admits it's in his blood although it's becoming more tricky now he's older and has his kids to think about.

"I find it hard to go away from home as I miss them but there is a little feeling I always get, late at night after a gig, travelling down the motorway. I mean, it's not a particularly romantic place but, you know, late at night, the streetlights and the white lines stretching out in front of you.

"Just moving on. I suppose it's because it's all I've ever known but that notion still sort of excites me. It still fills me with a sense of wonder. I certainly wouldn't want to do anything else," he adds. The man's commitment to touring has led to a very large and very loyal following of fans. So what keeps them coming back?

"I don't know, he replies. "I've tried to be consistent and I suppose not every record has worked out, obviously. I guess I've made a few turkeys in my time if I'm really honest but I've never released a record knowing it to be sub-standard. Likewise, I have never done a live show knowing it to be sub-standard. I always try my hardest."
