I was amazed to read the contrasting sentences given to two Sussex men convicted of violence (The Argus, November 10).

A parent of a bullied child was given a 17-month jail sentence for assaulting two teachers, while a young man was given 12 months for killing a refugee in a nightclub.

The former appeared to get his strong sentence because of his past record of convictions, whereas the young man who punched and stamped on the unfortunate foreigner seemed to get a lighter sentence because he was drunk, a university student and didn't really mean to seriously harm the victim. Some justice!
