Lines of trees will be planted as a lasting legacy of World Aids Day.

Traders in St James's Street, Brighton, have raised £1,500 which has been matched by Brighton and Hove City Council to buy 30 elm trees for the road.

Steve Lowndes and Ian Parsons, manager and owner of flower shop Planted, sparked off the idea when they put a tree outside the shop last year.

Steve said: "Elms in Brighton and Hove were badly hit by Dutch Elm Disease - we lost those two very old trees in Preston Park this year.

"These are disease free and hopefully the start of a bit of a green-up campaign round Kemp Town. I'd quite like to see Edward Street lined with cherry trees as well."

Four trees will be dug in today at 2.30pm and the remainder will be planted in January.

Meanwhile there will be some more frivolous cash-raising fun at Barber Black Sheep in St George's Road, Kemp Town.

All the staff at the barber's shop will be dressed in outragous outfits for the day and there will be a raffle. People are invited to drop in and donate some money.
