From the many letters on the subject, it is apparent there is a misconception the stirring march Sussex By The Sea is the regimental march of the Royal Sussex Regiment. But this isn't the case.
The regimental quick march of the 1st Battalion Royal Sussex is called The Royal Sussex.
Tradition has it, it was adopted by the 35th of Foot (Royal Sussex) after its triumph over the French Roussillon Regiment at the Battle of Quebec in 1759.
However, the march Sussex By The Sea was and is much-loved by all ex-Royal Sussex Regiment personnel, and is, sung with great gusto at the regimental dinner at Lewes Town Hall every April.
