Let us remember George Best as the great football legend he was.

To those of us who had the privilege of watching him play, his name must be included with the greatest footballers of all time.

But he should be seen as a legend and not a hero.

A hero is someone to inspire us, especially the young, and George's lifestyle and abuse of alcohol certainly did not put him in that category.

Many of us, especially when younger, like to go out for a drink but there comes a time when you have to decide to pack it in completely or drink in moderation. Otherwise, drink can take over, as in George's case.

If he hadn't been a great footballer, would he have received the attention and hero-worship following his death?

Being an amateur football player since the Twenties, my memories of George will be of his great ability to mesmerise defenders and to score great goals.
