I write regarding your article "Rare sight spotted hiding in woods" (The Argus, December 29).
I came across this fungus in Stanmer woods in Brighton in late summer/autumn 2004. From the picture and description of the location, I believe Pru Gridley probably found it at the same site.
It is encouraging that this spectacular fungus has survived from one year to the next.
The common name for Hericium erinaceum is Lion's Mane fungus, while Hedgehog fungus is the common name usually given to Hydnum repandum, which is a very different species commonly sold in European markets.
