A former senior executive at Asda and Matalan has been handed the top job at Somerfield following the supermarket chain's £1.1 billion takeover last
month.
Paul Mason, who resigned as president of European operations at Levi Strauss last Thursday, will become chief executive in March after current incumbent Steve Back resigned with immediate effect.
Mr Mason, 42, was chief executive at discount clothes chain Matalan for two years until his departure in 2003.
During seven years at Asda he was president and managing director of Asda Wal-Mart UK as well as chief operating officer.
