Leaving aside the issue of whether the Falmer stadium is right or wrong, perhaps the "snob value" argument needs to be looked at.

Many years ago, when an alternative location was first being considered, about six sites in the town were brought forward. None were acceptable to Brighton and Hove City Council.

When a sewage treatment works was being considered for the city, again, sites were selected but none were acceptable to the council.

When a waste incinerator was proposed, the only site deemed acceptable was in another town.

You can't but wonder if the council looks at these projects in the same way. While one might understand rejecting the waste and sewage plans aesthetically, it doesn't say much for the council's love of football.
