On the night of December 23-24, I was privileged to accompany some police officers on their beat.

I chose that evening because it was likely to be the liveliest, with many party-goers meeting up to celebrate the start of the Christmas holiday.

I wasn't disappointed as the town was full of people enjoying themselves - 99 per cent behaved themselves and were a credit to themselves and the town.

Unfortunately, a mindless minority shouted abuse, fought or generally behaved in an unacceptable way and were dealt with by the police in a professional manner.

By 11.15pm, the Durrington custody centre was full and arrangements had to be made to accommodate the undesirables. This was a pity as it removed much-needed officers from the town centre.

As a former soldier, I respected the professionalism of the police and was impressed by their ethos and dedication.

Many forfeited meal breaks or snatched a chocolate bar and cup of tea between incidents. Worthing residents should be grateful to this small but efficient force.

To those who celebrated in a civilised manner, I say: "Thank you."

To those few who were hell-bent on causing trouble, I hope they pay their £80 fixed-penalty fines and either mend their ways or stay away from Worthing.
