Dan Morath forgot the sniffles of his first English winter to help Haywards Heath move towards Twickenham.

The talented half back from New Zealand scored a hat-trick of tries and added seven conversions as Heath routed Truro 54-3 at Whitemans Green to reach the last eight of the Powergen Intermediate Cup.

Now, as the event goes fully national, Heath await today's draw knowing they have already become the first Sussex club to get this far.

Morath, whose brother Kurt has just left Heath to join Manawatu in his home country, was the star of a very good allround show by the London One outfit.

But that hardly surprised his coach, or the man who partnered him behind the scrum.

Heath coach Ian Davies knew he had two gems when he signed the Moraths in the summer.

After Saturday's display, he said: Daniel was fantastic.

"For a guy who has not played at ten for three years, he has done a massive job for us.

"He is so electric. His hands are so good, he can pass 20 metres off either hand which allows the backs greater space."

Scrum half Alex Meredith, who was also among the try scorers, has seen enough of Morath's skills at even closer quarters to be greatly impressed.

He said: "Dan didn't do too badly considering he was ill.

"He had this cold/flu thing that has been doing the rounds.

"But he is such a good ball player. He's intelligent, has a superb pass and a very good rugby brain."

Heath have earned a reputation for attacking from anywhere and they ran a disappointing Truro side ragged.

Wing Lee Otuhouma scored a try and also brilliantly passed out of the tackle to send in Owen Ashton.

Scores for Andrew Marienburg and Neil McGovern completed the rout as Heath's backs had a field day.

Davies would love to see his team produce that sort of rugby all the way to a Twickenham final.

He said: "It was very pleasing to see the players with smiles on their faces, all having a go.

"We threw the ball around in areas we might not have done if the game had been a lot closer.

"But it was great to have the confidence to try things.

"Most of the tries came from excellent support play and incisive breaks rather than grinding it out."

Meredith added: "It was superb, the support play and continuity were excellent.

"We did what we haven't really done so far this season and put the nail in the coffin when we needed to.

"Ideally we want a home draw now. We know it won't be easy from here on but we've made history already."

Uckfield clinched their place in the final of the Sussex Shield by beating Seaford 37-3. Crowborough beat Crawley 21-7 in a re-arranged Sussex One
match as Wareham, Andy Waters and Gareth Bissett scored tries. Keith Brooker converted all three.

Brighton lifted the John Shelton Cup with a 17-13 win at Hove as Shane Connell, Paul Pride and Simon Peters crossed with James Wall adding a conversion. A game played in great spirit saw Paul Hopkins and Adam Phillips score tries for Hove with Phillips also landing a penalty.

Plumpton used their friendly against Holbrook to give the complete squad a run out and won 24-3. Tries from Nigel Box, Justin Smith, Alistair McKenzie
and Liam Winger secured the victory.

Eastbourne used their free week to beat Worthing Development 36-13 in a friendly. Matt Pysden (2), Rob Paterson, Damon Varney and Rob Light scored tries for the winners.
