Flood defences are being improved on a stretch of beach.
A strengthened plastic barrier is being dug into the shingle bank on the coast at Worthing.
The work is being carried out on the low-lying coastal area from George V Avenue to Alinora Crescent.
Worthing Council said the barrier was designed to combat the "rare" event of water seeping through the shingle and flooding inland during high tides.
Other options, such as steel sheet piling and cement groutinjected curtains, which have been used in this area for emergency repairs in the past, were considered. The council said the plastic barrier was "the best way forward" in terms of costs and installation.
Pedestrian diversions were put in place on Monday because of the partial closure of the coastal footpath.
