In trying to put down Councillor Sue John's support for the Gatwick Express (Letters, January 10), councillors Norman, Oxley and Kemble show even greater ignorance.

Firstly, the Gatwick Express takes people from London Victoria to Gatwick Airport, so Brightonians are usually deterred from using it.

Second, Thameslink doesn't serve London Victoria.

Third, many season-ticket holders with a London-to-Brighton season ticket can use the Gatwick Express at no extra premium.

Fourth, the Express carries luggage as well as passengers but it isn't designed for commuting.

Fifth, if it was made to stop at more stations, it wouldn't be an express, would it?

Could the councillors furnish me with figures, rather than bandy about words like "phenomenal" when trying to embellish a poor argument.

The letter from these misguided councillors was shockingly articulated and grossly misleading.
