Thousands of people across Sussex will remember those who died in the Nazi Holocaust this week.

Holocaust Memorial Day, in memory of all victims of genocide, is on Friday but there are events in the county every day.

Tonight the Jubilee Library in Brighton will host a reading of poetry and prose examining the legacy of the Holocaust.

Special guests will read at the event which starts at 7pm and costs £5. The library also has a week-long Holocaust exhibition.

The Phoenix Arts Centre at William Parker School in Hastings is also holding an exhibition on Racism, Genocide and Anti-Semitism which runs until 5pm on Friday. Entry is free.

Restored air-raid shelters at Whitehawk Primary School are open to the public today and Thursday from 4.30pm to 6pm.

Entry costs £1.50 adult / 50p child. On Wednesday the University of Sussex holds its annual memorial event with a talk from Holocaust survivor Eva Clarke and a film showing the rescue of Bulgarian Jews during the Nazi rule. It takes place from 2pm to 5pm at Lecture Theatre A at the Falmer campus, off the A27.

A university spokeswoman said: "Wartime bravery and the tireless efforts of those who continue to bear witness to the Nazi atrocities against Jews and others are remembered at this year's Holocaust Memorial Day event at the university."

There is also an opportunity for reflection in the universitys Meeting House at midday with candlelit music and reading.

There will be a philosophical discussion on the Holocaust at the Jubilee Library on Thursday from 5.30pm to 7pm. The event is free. Author Sue Vice will also be at the library on Thursday, speaking on Holocaust literature and exploring the critical and theoretical background to such work. The event starts at 7pm and costs £5.

Students from Tideway School in Newhaven will plant an olive tree on Thursday on West Quay, Newhaven, at 11am. For more information call 01273 484112.

Holocaust survivor Alfred Huberman will speak at the Richmond Room by the Assembly Hall in Stoke Abbott Road, Worthing, on Friday at 4.30pm.

On Saturday the University of Sussex holds a workshop on Trauma and Memory in the 20th Century, including speakers like Lyn Smith who has been interviewing Holocaust survivors for the Imperial War Museum archive for 25 years.

It takes place in the Brighton and Sussex Medical Centre, Falmer, from 9.30am to 12.30pm. Entry is free. For more information call 01273 291068.

A special Holocaust service takes place at St-Mary-in-thecastle on Hastings seafront on Saturday at 11am. Entry is free but tickets must be booked in advance from Hastings Town Hall.
