A fight promoter has found an alternative venue for his controversial Ultimate Fighting contest.

Sol Gilbert, 30, had already sold half of the 800 tickets for his Zero Tolerance Fight Night at Hove Town Hall when Brighton and Hove City Council cancelled the booking, ruling it was inappropriate for the venue.

The event, renamed ZT Fight Night, has been rebooked at Effingham Park Hotel, Gatwick. It will be the first Ultimate Fighting contest in Sussex.

Mr Gilbert, British and European Ultimate Combat champion, says he lost £10,000 on printing tickets and posters, booking hotel rooms and flights for fighters and hiring caterers, dancers and rappers for the original event.

Fighters were due to fight in an octagonal rope-mesh cage but will now fight in an octagonal boxing ring.

Mr Gilbert, who runs ZT Fight Skool in Vine Street, Brighton, said: "It will be a brilliant day. This sport will some day be bigger than boxing."

ZT Fight Night takes place at Effingham Park Hotel from 3pm to 9pm on February 19. Doors for dining guests open at 1pm. Call 01273 604904 for tickets.
