Passengers have named the rail service linking Gatwick to London as the best in Britain.

Inspectors working for the Rail Passengers' Council carry out customer satisfaction surveys every six months, asking passengers how happy they are with the service and the state of railway stations.

The Gatwick Express, which runs non-stop to London Victoria, has won top place five times in a row.

Managing director David Stretch said: "To be ranked top is a triumph for our customer service ethos and true recognition of everyone in the Gatwick Express team.

"These results, with 93 per cent satisfaction, should be regarded as a phenomenal achievement."

Details of where other rail companies, such as Southern and Thameslink, came in the survey were being released later today.
