Hospital managers are today checking whether two wards will be able to open.

The wards at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton and Princess Royal Hospital in Haywards Heath have been closed to new patients because of an outbreak of an infectious bug. The norovirus, more commonly called winter vomiting disease, has affected dozens of patients in the last couple of weeks.

The condition is not life-threatening but it can be debilitating for vulnerable patients.

A Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust spokeswoman said the number of cases was falling and things were getting much better.

The virus is very common, particularly at this time of year.

People become ill for about 24 48 hours before recovering by themselves but may remain infectious for up to seven days.

Hospital managers are asking people who feel unwell to consider the whole range of health-care options before coming to hospital.

The best advice for those who display symptoms is to stay at home and drink plenty of water.

Anyone with concerns should call their GP or NHS Direct on 0845 4647.
