Purveyor of all things funky, Little Rik has moved his popular soul night to the Komedia, Brighton. Rik has been running In The Midnight Hour at the Sussex Arts Club for two years but felt it was time for a move. Tonight will be the first party at the new venue.

Expect grass-roots rhythm and blues, funk and soul from the likes of Wilson Pickett and Booker T And The MGs, and other tunes from the vaults of Atlantic and Stax, plus a sprinkling of Northern soul.

"It's basically black music from the Fifties to the early Seventies," says Rik, who's been spinning quality vinyl for 30 years.

"It's always been a dream of mine to have something similar to the Catfish Club," he says, referring to Brighton's legendary soul night which ran for 16 years.

Rik's DJing career began in Brighton in the early Seventies, when he played at the city's very first "disco pub", The Birds Nest in Grand Parade (now the Gloucester). He moved on to become resident at The Big Apple, playing alongside The Rolling Stones and Elton John.

Rik, who owns Rik's Discs record shop in Lewes and used to own Vinyl Demand in Brighton, hopes to eventually incorporate live bands into the night, although for now it's vinyl all the way, which should satisfy the ultimate soul junkie.

"I'll be playing classics and some obvious stuff too, although not disco," he says. "It's not going to be elitist - the night's for everyone."

Starts at 11pm, Entry £5 before midnight. Call 01273 647100.
