I totally disagree with the proposals put forward by Councillor Simon Williams to turn Kemp Town into Brighton's Gay Village.

Firstly, what about people living in Kemp Town who are not gay?

Has Councillor Williams considered their feelings? He also said he would want better lighting and a bigger police presence to ward off violent homophobes - at whose expense?

Surely in today's society everybody is vulnerable to attacks - whether gay, straight, young or old. All that having a gay village will do is draw attention to the fact and make them even more vulnerable to attacks.

If gay people want to be treated as equals and lead a normal life, that's fine, but don't ask for special treatment and expect others to be happy about it.

As a final note, the way they behave at Brighton Pride does nothing to help their cause. I used to watch the parade and thought it was great but now participants walk along with 90 per cent of their body on show, drinking, kissing and cuddling each other.

This is not something parents want their young children to see.

All it does is draw unnecessary attention and cause bad feeling.
