A record number of runners will take part in the 16th Brighton half-marathon.

More than 3,000 people are expected to join the annual 13.1-mile race on February 19 - 300 more than last year.

The run will start at Madeira Drive at 10.30am and take a scenic route along Brighton's seafront before returning to Madeira Drive for the finish.

Competitors, who are travelling from all over the UK and overseas to take part, will be divided into two groups, starting two minutes apart, with 1,500 runners in each group.

For the first time, roads will be closed to take runners past the Royal Pavilion and through The Lanes.

The hilly part of the race, as it follows the cycle track above the Brighton Marina, has been reduced but an undulating challenge remains, say organisers.

Many runners will treat the run as a warm-up for the Flora London Marathon in April and fun runners are encouraged to come in fancy dress.

The Brighton half-marathon is being organised by HIV and Aids charity Sussex Beacon with two Brighton Athletic Clubs, Arena 80 AC and Phoenix AC, St John Ambulance, Sussex Police and Brighton and Hove City Council. The Argus is a sponsor.

All proceeds from the event will help the Sussex Beacon continue to provide specialist care and support for men and women living with HIV and AIDS. Last year's race raised a record-breaking £45,000.
