Hundreds of students celebrated the culmination of years of study at their graduation ceremonies.

More than 600 students collected their degrees at the University of Sussex winter graduation ceremonies at The Dome in Brighton on Friday.

Dressed in traditional black robes and mortar boards, they were all called on to the theatre stage to be officially awarded their degrees by university chancellor Lord Attenborough and vice chancellor professor Alasdair Smith.

Professor Smith said: "Sussex prides itself on its international outlook. This is reflected in the impressive achievements of our international students and mature students represented here, whose contributions to the character of the university are particularly welcome.

"I congratulate all our graduating students on their success - and I wish them every success for the future."

The university conferred two honorary degrees to Lord Lloyd of Berwick and Professor Norman Davies.

Lord Lloyd was made a Doctor of Laws in recognition of his work in the legal profession.

He has served as a QC, Attorney General to the Prince of Wales, as a High Court judge and a Law Lord. He has taken part in many cases including the appeal of the Birmingham Six. He is an advocate of human rights and has spoken out on constitutional reform, Gulf War illness and the Prevention of Terrorism Bill.

Professor Davies was made a Doctor of Letters for his work as a historian. He is an internationally acclaimed authority on British, European and Polish history.

His book, God's Playground, is regarded as one of the most influential studies of Polish history.
