On February 12, I was unlucky enough to fracture, dislocate and generally make a mess of my finger while playing football in Preston Park.

As a consequence, I spent two-and-a-half hours in A&E and most of the next day in the Royal Sussex County Hospital (RSCH) undergoing, then recovering from, an operation.

While it is abundantly clear the NHS is in desperate need of more money and more beds, the care and attention I received from the staff at RSCH was absolutely wonderful.

I came into contact with 13 members of staff over the two days, ranging from receptionists to surgeons, porters, consultants and nurses, and each and every one was a credit to their profession and to the hospital.

Thanks to them all.
