A new head of the organisation behind one of the UK's most successful gay festivals will be elected next week.

David Harvey, chairman of the Pride in Brighton and Hove committee, is standing down from the post to concentrate on a political career.

Mr Harvey has been selected to stand as the Labour candidate for Brighton and Hove City Council's Queen's Park ward, where he takes over from former council leader Ken Bodfish.

His successor as head of the Pride committee will be chosen at the group's AGM at Brighton's Thistle Hotel on Thursday, March 16, at 7pm.

Pride runs in the first week of August, ending in a one-day carnival on Saturday and a street party in St James's Street on Sunday.

There is also a winter Pride with a programme of music, comedy and performance fund-raising events.

Brighton and Hove Pride is a registered charity and receives corporate sponsorship as well as funding from Brighton and Hove City Council.
