It has been reported that a hot air balloon may be placed on the Steine at the point where the Argus-donated Christmas tree stood (The Argus, February 14).

I read with interest about the sorry state the lawns had been left in by Brighton and Hove City Council but I now understand why it has not gone out of its way to rectify this - it's because it has another money-spinning idea - to rent the land for the balloon.

Also, the news has been reported that yet again we will have a Spiegel Tent - in fact, deep joy, two of them. I presume the Ladyboys of Bangkok will be back again, as will Gay Pride.

As the council must be raking in the money from these various events - and I'm in no doubt there will be more surely the public have a right to know what happens to the money.

It has been claimed the money is ploughed back into the event area to repair any damage but where is the evidence of this?

Can anyone shed any light on where this money is channelled?

It is not on fencing, or planting, or returfing. I do not understand why this council allows the most important part of our city look such a mess. Even the Royal Pavilion grounds are treated with disrespect.

Perhaps Pat Foster (assistant director of environmental services) should pay a visit to Hampton Court Palace to see how things are done there then maybe start putting the pride back into our city.
