DJ Fatboy Slim is throwing another beach party this summer - but not on home turf.

The DJ - real name Norman Cook - has signed up to perform at a beach party in Portrush Strand, County Antrim, this June.

Norman manned the decks at two free beach parties in Brighton but swore he would not stage another there after 250,000 people swamped the city at the second Big Beach Boutique in 2002.

The Hove-based musician said afterwards the event was a "hair's breadth" away from being a major incident after the city was brought to the brink of chaos. About 160 people were injured during the event and Australian nurse Karen Manders, 26, died two days after falling 20ft from railings on the Upper Esplanade after attending the concert. The beach was also strewn with broken bottles.

But his success in 2004 when he played a set to 300,000 fans on Flamengo Beach in Rio de Janeiro showed it is possible to stage a huge concert safely. Norman employed 1,200 private security guards for the event and 500 police officers were brought in.

No glass was allowed on the beach and the beach was cleared within 24 hours.

Norman will be spinning tracks at the Irish beach party on June 17.
