As this is a World Cup year and interest in the "beautiful game" is higher than for some time, I would like to suggest for your consideration a debate on England's finest-ever side taken, as I am in my 50s, from the past 50 years.
Perhaps from readers' selections, you could publish the results of these choices and come up with what us oldies would see as the side we all would like to see in action.
Well, here goes with the players and my reasons for their selection:
Manager: Sir Alf Ramsey.
1 Gordon Banks: Best keeper I've seen.
2 Jimmy Armfield: Totally reliable full back.
3 Ray Wilson: Rarely made any errors.
4 Paul Gascoigne: Unpredictable but awesome.
5 Bobby Moore: World class, need I say more?
6 Duncan Edwards: Most complete player ever.
7 Stanley Matthews: The wizard of dribble.
8 Jimmy Greaves: 44 goals in 57 games.
9 Bobby Charlton: Best twofooted player ever.
10 Wayne Rooney: Prodigious talent.
11 Tom Finney: Has there been a better winger?
Subs: 12 Steven Gerrard: Very close to selection.
13 Frank Lampard: Most improved player.
14 Gary Lineker: Only just overlooked.
Well that's my lot. Can anyone beat that side? All I'll say is, if you can, it would be one hell of a team.
