Traders in a Brighton street are coming round to the idea of being part of the city's first Business Improvement District (BID).

Research by the Brighton and Hove Business Forum shows that 55 per cent of businesses in Gardner Street, North Laine, now support the idea. Two weeks ago only 38 per cent were in favour.

BIDs allow businesses in a specific area to pay a small levy on their business rates - usually one per cent - to go towards items of their choice.

Indications show Christmas lights, marketing and security would be the main preferences of most businesses in the BID area currently under review.

The borders of the BID will be decided by the end of the week.

The Business Forum aims to hold a referendum in May to decide whether the BID - which will cover part of North Laine and The Lanes - gets the go-ahead.
