I am concerned the outside restaurant seating area in East Street, Brighton, is under review, with the possibility of it not being allowed to continue (The Argus, April 13).

I have lived in Brighton since the Forties and I am proud to bring friends here because it has a wonderful, sophisticated, Continental feel which sets it apart from other seaside towns.

In East Street, you could sit and eat in the open air, listen to live music and watch the street artists at work.

This gave the area a cosmopolitan flavour and brought people to the surrounding shops.

This Easter, the once-buzzing square in East Street was a sorry sight. The music went a while ago and now the al fresco-style seating is under review.

Look at Covent Garden in London and see how many people flock there to enjoy the street entertainers and atmosphere and bring prosperity to an area which, once the market had gone, would have died. Please don't let it happen in East Street.
