Horsham ladies rounded off a hugely successful season by lifting the Sussex Cup for the 11th year running.

Siobhan Aherne scored four times as Horsham swept aside Eastbourne 9-0 in the final at Lewes on Sunday.

Already crowned Women's National South champions in their debut season in the National League, the double was completed in emphatic style.

Eastbourne, who finished runners-up to Horsham last year, found their old foes too strong again with the other goals coming from Sarah Gwynn (two), including one excellent reverse stick strike, Erica Rogers, Eleanor Keefe and Dilly Newton, playing against her old club.

Manager Jo Humphries said: "This rounded off a great season for us and sends us into the summer break in buoyant mood.

"We are already looking forward to next season when we are looking to do well again.

"We want to continue improving and pick up where we have left off this year."

Victory completed an excellent day for Horsham as their second and fourth teams also won finals at Lewes.

Lynne Jones scored twice as the seconds beat Brighton II 2-0 in the Plate final while Emily Smith and Zoe Wood were the scorers as Horsham IV defeated Chichester III in the Shield final.

Sussex's men have claimed a place in the finals of the county championships which will take place at the Trojans Club, Southampton, on Sunday, May 28.

They won through a strong pool of matches at Southport last weekend to clinch a spot in the finals.

Under the guidance of coach Craig Carolan and captain Sam Beere, Sussex overcame hosts Lancashire, Yorkshire and Staffordshire.

A young, comprised mainly of players from Chichester and Brighton, were in excellent form all weekend and Ben Barnes (Chichester) took the man of the tournament award.

Sussex began with a 4-3 defeat of Lancashire thanks to goals from Barnes, Ralph Veltom (Chichester), Steve Edmonds (University of Birmingham) and Richard Blakesley (Chichester).

Barnes and Veltom were on the scoresheet again, together with Jack Lerwill (Chichester) and Sam Rose (Brighton), as Yorkshire were edged out 4-3 in a close contest.

Carolan (Brighton) and Beere (Chichester) were among the scorers in the final game as Staffordshire succumbed 6-1, with Barnes and Veltom adding two apiece.

The finals day will consist of two semis and a final. The other qualifiers are Notts, Berkshire and Cheshire.

Brighton's Charl van der Merwe will be available and clubmate Kevin Browne should return after missing last weekend's action due to a family bereavement.

Sussex squad: Danny Godsmark, Ian Rowland, Ben Barnes, Steve Spear, Jon Weait, Sam Beere, Ralph Veltom, Jack Lerwill, Richard Blakesley (all Chichester), Richard Baker, Charl van der Merwe, Craig Carolan, Gareth Lendrum, Sam Rose (all Brighton), Steve Edmonds (University of Birmingham), Chris Marchant (Lewes).

Sussex were without any East Grinstead players because the National League premier division season has resumed following the Commonwealth Games and World Cup qualifying tournament in China.

Grinstead were beaten 7-2 by champions-elect Cannock, who are 11 points clear of Surbiton.

Martin Jones, Simon Ramsden and Andrew Langlands all scored two apiece after Matt Taylor's secondminute opener.

England under-21 international Ashley Jackson scored two penalty corners for Grinstead but it was little consolation.

Grinstead, who remain sixth in the table and more importantly eight points clear of the bottom two, entertain Surbiton this Saturday before visiting Old Loughtonians on Sunday.
