Unusual films and live performance will collide to bring an exotic short film programme to the Brighton Festival Fringe.

Final Cut, now the largest short film screening organisation on the South Coast, will celebrate its fifth birthday with its most extensive programme to date.

The group is screening events at venues across Brighton, showcasing more than 70 new films, including several UK and world premieres.

Films called "ultra-shorts", leftfield music videos and film-themed VJ, or video jockey, sets are among the packed programme.

The Final Cut - Last Night Screening Party will be held at the Hanbury Arms Ballroom tomorrow to celebrate the organisation's fifth anniversary.

Highlights include the Oddfellows Casino, a cabaret group led by Brighton author David Bramwell, who wrote A Cheeky Guide to Brighton.

There will also be a special selection of underground short films from New York and Los Angeles, as well as screenings of the best new shorts from local film-makers.

A joint venture between Final Cut and Birds Eye View - which promotes women film-makers across the world - will also arrive at the Hanbury Arms Ballroom on Wednesday, May 31.

Part of a national tour, the programme includes Andrea Arnold's Oscar winner Wasp and the BAFTA-nominated and TCM Classic Shorts Competition Winner Nits.

Final Cut organiser Richard Harris, an award-winning film-maker, said: "We have had our most successful festival to date with two sell-out screenings already and look forward to our final screening event of the festival on Wednesday, which we expect will also sell out.

"Since Final Cut had its first screening at the 2002 Brighton Festival we have shown more than 500 short films to Brighton audiences.

"The films have come from national, international and local film-makers, many of whom have won awards."

Final Cut - Last Night Screening Party will be at the Hanbury Arms Ballroom, St George's Road, Brighton, tomorrow at 8pm.
