When Ian Hunt blames the Tories for running down council housing (Letters, May 25), he forgets Labour have done nothing to reverse the process. Worse, many Labour councils, including Brighton and Hove City Council, have privatised (or seek to privatise) remaining council homes by "stock transfer".

In fact, galloping inflation in the Seventies forced Labour to start reducing council house spending.

It also led to Labour holding down wages and benefits below inflation (the Social Contract) so we were effectively no worse off under the Tories, which is why voters rejected Labour from 1977 to 1997.
