In its feature about the homogenisation of Brighton, The Argus is right to single out Starbucks for its unstoppable attempt to capitalise on our local market (The Argus, May 26).

Many readers, especially those who support Save Omar (a campaign for a local man locked up without trial in Guantanamo Bay), should be aware Starbucks provides coffee to support the US military in Guantanamo Bay.

This is no doubt useful to keep the US service personnel awake during those long interrogations which no doubt last until the early hours of many a morning.

What does this tell us about the ethics of this huge, global company?

A spokesperson has said: "We refrain from taking a position on the legality of the detention centre at Guantanamo Bay".

I appeal to all Brighton residents not to "refrain from taking a position".

To those who find themselves entering one of this town's many Starbucks cafes, think of the many held in detention without trial in Guantanamo Bay.

Then walk out again and take your business to one of the many independent cafes in Brighton which are probably cheaper and certainly contribute much more to the vitality and individualism of this Peace Messenger city.
