I have received a letter from Brighton and Hove City Council planning department (application number BH2006/02059) informing me a 12.5m mast and base station will be installed on the corner of Stonery Road and Mile Oak Road if planning permission is approved.
The apparently insignificant small green verge this application refers to has an interesting history.
The land was purchased by Portslade Parish Council in 1957 (when the planning application to build bungalows 51 and 53 Stonery Road was made) to create a safe road junction with a clear exit view. In 1967, after a number of car accidents, a compulsory purchase order was put on the garden of 53 Stonery Road by the highways department and the garden wall was moved back to improve the view.
Given this history, how can the highways department now consider allowing an obstruction to this view to be built?
Which is more important? Road safety or rent money for masts?
