Tailgating through a red traffic light seems to be the norm nowadays, while driving very late through a red light also appears to be common practice.

For example, I have moved forward, on green, at the Sackville Road/Old Shoreham Road lights only to have to give way to traffic still turning right across my path.

I have also witnessed motorists failing to heed other red lights in and around the city.

Anyone caught in this ludicrous act should have their licence withdrawn immediately and never returned.

"I didn't mean to harm anyone, I just couldn't be bothered to stop".

Should any policemen find they are a bit down on their "bookings", they only need stand by any traffic light, such as those at Sackville Road in the busy periods, and they will achieve their target within two light changes.

A counter to this insane practice would be to install cameras at all traffic lights (the costs would be repaid by fines in the first month) - or perhaps The Argus should investigate, take a few pictures and publish the results.

Who is responsible for deciding when school holidays are to take place? I would like the opportunity to tell this person they are an idiot.

The British summer can be (and usually is) a lot hotter than in the past. By the end of June, children are tired, fractious, exhausted from exams and SATS tests and need a break to run around in the sun and be kids for a few months.

Teaching staff are in a similar frame of mind.

After all the tests, our job is to keep the lid on a boiling pot of worn-out kiddies who would be better off in the fresh air than stuck in a classroom all day, dreaming about their paddling pools.

Just about everywhere else in the world, schools break up at the end of June and return when it is cooler, at the end of August or later.

It makes sense. Have you tried sitting in a blisteringly hot classroom with no air-conditioning where you can't even open the windows nice and wide because of "health and safety rules"?

Normally, our schools close for the summer about July 20.

Even that is stupidly late to enjoy the best of our brief summer.

But this year we are closing our doors on July 27. Madness.

Instead of a lovely break in the summer sun, kids will be enduring the blustery, rainy traits of August, which seems to be traditionally Brightonian for a mere five weeks. Brighton and Hove City Council has decided to give us longer Christmas and Easter breaks to compensate.

Does it not know entertaining kids in cold, rainy weather for so long is sheer hell.

This council has proved itself inept and ill-informed when it comes to education generally.

This is just the icing on an already rather unpalatable cake.
