Jon Cook today called for a revamp to the speedway season in a bid to avoid staging loss-making meetings.

The Eastbourne Eagles promoter wants the number of Elite League matches to be halved next summer.

He believes the move will mean tracks can avoid staging meetings on nights when they know they will not attract a good attendance.

That would mean Eagles being able to take a break on GP weekends rather than running on Friday night.

Cook will also support the introduction of a League Cup competition when promoters meet in the close season.

He believes the 11 Elite League clubs should race against each other just twice a season in the league, as opposed to the four head-to-heads they have had this summer.

Reading Bulldogs' arrival this year had increased the top flight to 11 teams, meaning 20 home EL fixtures for each track.

That leads to clubs racing most weeks with Eagles forced to switch fixtures to Friday night or Sunday afternoon to fit around the World Cup and Grands Prix.

Other tracks also have to stage fixtures on what they term as their off-nights.

Cook said: "There is a feeling in the league we should only race each team once at home and once away. We are in that camp. That would mean running meetings every other week.

"At present, having 20 home meetings in the league means every track has to run on nights they would otherwise have chose not to run on.

"We would run our league meetings on nine prime dates every other Saturday in the summer, plus one Monday meeting live on Sky, and we would have time to promote our meetings properly.

"It would be more akin to the football fixture list. We would also be able to re-arrange any meetings which were rained off more easily."

Cook insists he is not totally averse to trying more Sunday afternoon meetings but they would not be in high summer.

Ideally, he would run the league campaign in summer and start the season with a League Cup comprising two regionally-based groups.

The Knockout Cup and could also be fitted into the season as could the end-of-term Craven Shield. Eagles resume their Elite League campaign on Wednesday when they visit Poole.

Coventry are the next visitors to Arlington on Saturday.
