The father of Big Brother star Pete has revealed his heartache over walking out when his son was just six years old.

The reality show contestant from Brighton is one of the most popular participants on the programme and has won the hearts of the nation and his fellow housemates with his caring and loving attitude.

But Pete, 24, has been hiding a heartbreaking secret.

His father, Mark Bennett, lost contact with his son after his mum Anne Stephenson, a violinist, got a new boyfriend and told him to stay away.

Mark, 46, a carer from Cornwall, said: 'When Anne told me to stay away, it broke my heart. But I honestly thought I was doing the right thing. In hindsight it was the biggest mistake of my life."

Mark met Pete's mother when he was 22. They had a tempestuous relationship and were considering splitting up but Anne fell pregnant.

Mark said: "I wanted to stick around and try to make it work for the sake of the baby. When Pete arrived I knew I had to do everything I could to stay with my son and help bring him up."

The couple split up when Pete was ten months old but Mark continued to play a part in his upbringing.

He said: "I had looked after Pete when his mum was on tour with Siouxsie And The Banshees but I had to give that up and I can never forgive myself for it.

"When Anne got a new boyfriend she wanted me out of the picture. I know Pete understands now why it happened but when he was little I know he found it tough."

Anne has said Mark was relieved when he walked out on his son but he denies this.

He said: "I love Pete with all my heart and it tore me in two doing what I did."

Mark last saw Pete when he was 16.

He said: "I had heard he was unwell and I tried to get hold of him. He picked up the phone and said: 'Hello Dad.'

"It was great to hear his voice. Pete came down to visit and we had a great time. We have stayed in touch ever since.

"I'm extremely proud of what he has achieved in the house.

"Pete passed on a message through Lea when she was evicted to say he wants to see me there too. I was so pleased when I heard that. He has been brilliant and he is the best son anyone could wish for."
